Sleeping In on the Weekends
The theme of this blog is related to staying up late on the weekends and then sleeping in on the weekend mornings. I chose this topic because of the upcoming Halloween weekend!
Many of us will be out celebrating at various Halloween parties this weekend, and we will most likely be up fairly late in the night. It then seems normal for us to get a normal amount of sleep after being out, which leads us to sleep much later into the morning/afternoon than normal. However, after doing some research, it appears that this could actually make you feel more tired during the day. Research suggests that this could disrupt your normal sleeping pattern and make you feel drowsy during the day. So, while it may be hard, you might be better off waking up at a relatively normal time if you go out, because it might be much more beneficial to you than sleeping all morning. It is recommended that you drink water after waking up for multiple reasons, but it could jump start your alertness most importantly, which may allow you to actually follow through with getting up earlier. Then, if needed, have some coffee and you should have a better day than if you were to have slept in.
Happy Halloween weekend everyone!

Happy Halloween weekend everyone!
I have definitely experienced this phenomenon that you are talking about. My sleep schedule during the week is relatively normal, about midnight- 9AM. However, sometimes on the weekends I won't get to sleep until 4 or 5am and then don't wake up until noon. Although both cases I am getting about the same amount of sleep, the actual timing was definitely different which makes adjusting back to the weekdays more difficult. I think the take home message with this is that you should try your best to maintain relatively consistent sleep patterns because it keeps your body from getting confused and keeps your energy levels consistant. I am a hockey referee and sometimes on the weekends I only get 3 or 4 hours of sleep, which makes going to work on Monday much more difficult.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very important topic, especially for college students because we often times stay up late on a day to day basis. I didn't know that drinking water after you wake up can make you more alert, but its something that I will definitely try. I often times feel drowsy after a late night know matter how long I sleep the next day which still seems crazy to me. Great post!
